“Do not come closer,” he said. “Remove the sandals from you feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” – Exodus 3:5
Wherever God is found is special because God is himself special. There is no one like him in all the universe. He is utterly unique and stands outside of and apart from his created universe. In addition, His greatness and goodness are perfect and complete. Nothing can be added to God to improve him. God needs no suggestions or advice on how to conduct his affairs. Because of this, God is the standard by which we measure perfect greatness and goodness.
I remember the show Home Improvement in the 1990s. It starred the comedian Tim Allen as Tim “the toolman” Taylor, a lovable, albeit, accident prone, small market T.V. show host. Tim Taylor’s show was “Tool Time,” a home improvement show before the days of HGTV and Chip and Joanna Gaines. A significant aspect of the show was Tim’s inability to really improve anything, despite him being the host and trying his hardest to do things right.
This is often how I feel when measuring myself. I am often reminded that I don’t measure up. Despite being the host of my own life and trying my best, I never measure up to God’s holiness. He truly is unique. However, I can be of good cheer! Like in the desert with Moses, God has provided a way for me to measure up to him. He did so by coming down to where I am through Jesus. Jesus measured up for me and took the burden I carry upon himself. I never have to feel like I don’t measure up again!
Moses humbled himself and removed his shoes because God was near. God asks us to do the same. He has come near to us and calls each of us to humble our hearts before him. He has done all the hard work of holiness for us and we never need to feel like we don’t measure up again!
