A custodian found it when repairing a locker in the North Canton Middle School building
NORTH CANTON A dirty, faded red purse was found Wednesday after more than 60 years in a school crevice.
A custodian found it when repairing a locker in the North Canton Middle School building, which was built in 1956 and formerly served as the high school. Communications Director Polly Doyle said her understanding is that the custodian found the purse “wedged” behind a piece of metal that detached from a school locker.
“It would be what we call today a clutch purse,” she said.
The custodian and principal opened the purse and found photos and membership cards — to the YMCA and library — from 1957. They belonged to Patti Rumfola.
Doyle then contacted the North Canton Alumni Association with hope of returning the purse to its rightful owner. The association determined that Rumfola graduated in 1960 and had a Maryland address and phone number for her in the 1999 alumni directory.
“I called the phone number, but that number is no longer her phone number,” Doyle said.
The man who answered the phone offered to visit the address in Annapolis, Md. A school district Facebook post attempting to locate Rumfola also received a few responses.
However, online records and an obituary show Patricia (Rumfola) Michele died in 2013 at the age of 71 in her hometown of DuBois, Pa. According to the obituary, she became a teacher in Maryland and retired “after many years of service.”
Michele also was a costume designer and seamstress for a theater in DuBois and founded a Theatre Arts Guild and Young Women’s Club in Punxsutawney, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and was survived by five children, all of Maryland.
Doyle said her next step is to try to contact them. The purse contained pictures of family members and a pet dog.
“It might mean something to her kids,” Doyle said.
