Matthew 6:9 “Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven…”
As we all know family relationships can be the most complicated, especially with our fathers. Sometimes we can have the most wonderful experiences and memories, but other times we remember the flaws and mistakes of our fathers. The good news is that we have a heavenly father that is perfect and gracious in all his ways towards us. We can look to him for the love and care that we all need.
The title “father” can cover many aspects but when it comes to God it often refers to both his role as creator and originator of all that is and his care for those in relationship with him. We see this in a familiar passage to many in God’s Word, the Lord’s Prayer of Matthew 6:9-13. These few verses give us a glimpse into the nature of God as our father.
In the Lord’ Prayer, Jesus instructs his followers to pray to God in the relationship of father with the opening phrase of “Our Father in heaven.” Here God is not some far off imagination or impression but rather he is close and in relationship with us, he is our Father. However, we also see that he is in “heaven,” marking him as high and above all that he has created, since he is the origin of everything. In addition, Jesus instructs followers to call for the regarding God the Father as holy, or set apart from everything that is common and created by saying “hallowed be your name.” This sets God apart from all the other gods worshiped. Having done this, Jesus then calls his followers to call upon the authority of the Father, calling for his kingdom and will to rule the earth as it does in heaven. What a great and powerful Father we are to worship and trust in.
In contrast to the loftiness of these elements, the last part of the Lord’s Prayer is close and practical for each individual. Provision for daily bread, forgiveness from the mistakes that each of us make, and deliverance from the evil that besets our world are all on the mind of our Father and we are to make these requests of him. What a tender and near Father we are to depend on for our every need.
No matter your relationship with your earthly father, your heavenly Father is truly good and seeks a dynamic and enriching relationship with you. He has provided the way of this relationship through his Son Jesus, so that anyone who trusts in Jesus is brought into perfect relationship with God the Father, falling under is love and care.
