Next time you drive through the front gate be sure to wave to Tom Hibbert, Treasure Lake security guard, and ask for an autograph. Hibbert, a Treasure Lake employee for the past two years, is headlining as Johnny Cash in the Tony® Award Winning musical, “Million Dollar Quartet,” on Saturday in DuBois.
Singing casually all his life, Hibbert says he didn’t find his passion for music until his freshman year of high school. It was Lake residents, and directors of “Million Dollar Quartet”, Becky and Joe Sensor, that “convinced me to start doing shows,” he says. “I’ve done a lot of shows, including directing as well!”
In addition to his job working security, and performing with the Reitz Theater Player, Hibbert is studying Music Performance at Penn State and plans to sing professionally in either pop or opera.
He has performed in a number of well known shows including “Les Miserables” (Valjean), “Godspell” (John the Baptist), “Romeo and Juliet” (Romeo), and “Next to Normal” (Gabe).
“Playing Johnny Cash … is so much different than anything I’ve ever played!” says Hibbert, “Cash plays a significant part in this show, mostly because the future of “Sun Records” rests on him and Carl Perkins, and Johnny’s actions drive a lot of the show’s conflicts.”
The Reitz Theater Players will present, “Million Dollar Quartet” at the DuBois Area Middle School on June 22nd at 7:30 pm, as a special one-night fundraising performance for the Reitz Theater.
The musical is set on December 4, 1956, when a twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. “Million Dollar Quartet” brings that legendary December night to life with a tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations that is both poignant and funny. Showcased hit songs include: “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm and you will be able to further support the Reitz Theater as there will be concessions available, a basket raffle and a 50/50 prior to the show, along with complimentary sweet tea. Winners of the basket raffle and 50/50 will be announced during intermission.
