Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, California … these are just a few of the states that send teams to serve the under-resourced people of a remote community in rural Jamaica. What might surprise you is this nationally-known sending organization was founded by Treasure Lake residents.
Won By One To Jamaica got its start in the 1980s when Henry Shaffer took teams down to help and work alongside residents in the mountain valley of Harmons. “I thought if I could help a little bit over a long period in the same community, we might really be able to make a difference,” said Henry Shaffer, founder and former director of the mission organization. And make a difference he did!
Today, Won By One To Jamaica has constructed over 1,000 homes, built up a group of Christ followers, employs dozens of local Jamaicans, built and operates a thrift store, sponsors over 300 children to go to school, and assists the community in whatever ways its residents see fit. Shaffer’s goal was to help the WHOLE person – the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual components of those he came in contact with.
The organization takes teams ranging in size from 10-60 people from all over the country. Trips last 8 days and include a visit to a children’s home, construction of a house, spending time at a nearby nursing facility, dinner in a local home, teaching in a school, and sharing life with the local residents of Harmons. Participants range from 5 to 80 years old, and there are meaningful projects for people of any age. For approximately $1600, a trip participant gets airfare, ground transportation, food and lodging. The trip price also includes all building materials and a one-night stay at the beach.
In February each year, there is a team assembled from DuBois and western PA. An information meeting is being held on Tuesday, July 2 at 6:00 pm at Tri County Church for those who would like more details.
Won By One To Jamaica is a non-profit organization, registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3. If you would like more information about joining a local team, or how to get involved, contact Erin Shaffer at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or visit our website at http://www.wonbyonetojamaica.com
